Sheffield’s New Independent Race Equality Commission Calls For Evidence

Sheffield Town Hall

Sheffield’s new Race Equality Commission has begun seeking submissions of evidence to support and inform its inquiry into race inequality in the city.

“Sheffield is a city where everyone is welcome and where everyone should be able to thrive. But as much as we promote fairness and equality for all, we are fully aware that racial inequality still affects people’s lives in many ways.”Councillor Julie Dore, Leader of Sheffield City Council

Sheffield Independent Race Equality Commission

The commission has been established to provide a non-partisan strategic assessment of the nature, extent, causes and impacts of race inequality in the City. It will then make recommendations for tackling these issues.

Operating like a Parliamentary Select Committee, the commission will be independent of Sheffield City Council.

It’s focussed inquiry will be chaired by Emeritus Professor Kevin Hylton, from Leeds Beckett University. Evidence will be heard in public with a view to producing a final report in September 2021.

The Race Equality Commission’s task is to engage the people of Sheffield in a purposeful dialogue on race, racism, and racial inequality. This requires representative and diverse voices. The evidence received, and work of the soon to be appointed commissioners, will directly affect its success.”Professor Kevin Hylton*, Chair of Sheffield’s Race Equality Commission

Call for evidence

Both people and organisations are now invited to give evidence on several fronts:

  • Racial inequality in Sheffield
  • Analysis of the cause or causes of racism and/or racial inequality in Sheffield
  • Examples of good practice in relation to reducing racism and/or racial inequality (from within the city, elsewhere in the UK, or overseas)
  • What you or your organisation believe would be the best way to tackle racism and/or racial inequality in Sheffield

Submissions are requested by a deadline of September 18 2020.

“This is one of the most important steps for this Commission. We have to identify and investigate before we can learn best practice and make recommendations.

“Please come forward with evidence, even if you are unsure. We will look at every submission and no matter how small, what you tell us could make a significant difference.”

Commissioner applications

Additionally, the Sheffield Independent Race Equality Commission is seeking applications for volunteer commissioners to take part in the process.

Commissioners will be expected to contribute expertise rather than represent specific issues and will be drawn from communities across Sheffield, including young people.

“I look forward to working alongside an ambitious group of commissioners and the citizens of Sheffield to more fully understand how we can better achieve racial equality and social justice.”Professor Kevin Hylton*, Chair of Sheffield’s Race Equality Commission
