A brand new bike park is the latest of a number of improvements recently announced for Sheffield’s Hillsborough Park.

New All-Wheeled Bike Park Coming to Hillsborough Park

An all-wheeled Bike Park has been given the planning green light for a section of Hillsborough Park.

The new facility will be installed besides the tennis courts near the Penistone Road side of the park.

Funding has been secured for the project, created jointly by Sheffield City Council, Sheffield Hallam University, Move More and Access Sport.

“This exciting new bike park will provide excellent modern cycling facilities for all. It’s a fantastic example of partnership working, drawing on expertise and national initiatives in response to the needs of our communities.

“Not only will it be a great attraction for visitors to Hillsborough Park, but it will enable those with barriers to cycling, such as disabilities, affordability and access, to develop their skills and a love for travelling on wheels.”Councillor Mary Lea, Cabinet Member for Culture, Parks and Leisure

Energising Youth and Inclusive Cycling in Sheffield

The Hillsborough Park All-Wheeled Bike Park project aims to energise youth and inclusive cycling in Sheffield.

As well as providing a new hub for a community cycling club run by local residents, Access Sport will utilise the facility to provide bikes and equipment as well as storage and regular coaching sessions.

“The new bike park will be a fantastic asset for Hillsborough and for Sheffield; it will create new cycling opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to get active and will encourage more people to enjoy one of Sheffield’s many beautiful green spaces.”Dr Anna Lowe, Programme Manager for the National Centre for Sport and Exercise Medicine

“It was fantastic to hear that the Hillsborough All Wheeled Bike Park was granted planning permission. The facility and activation programme will provide the local community with a fantastic asset to support people of all ages to live active lifestyles, bolster health and wellbeing, as well as build a solid foundation for a lifelong fundamental skill in learning to ride a bike. This will hopefully translate to positive health behaviours throughout life, such as active travel.”Dr Gareth Jones, Researcher at Sheffield Hallam University, Academy for Sport and Physical Activity

The new all-wheeled bike park is aimed to be completed by Spring 2021.

The six-week programme will see the installation of a new ‘Snakes Head’ slide and an activity trail. Subsequently the current embankment slide will be replaced by an embankment climbing feature.

This first phase is set to take around six weeks, with subsequent phases planned when funding becomes available. Sheffield City Council say they are working with the Friends of Hillsborough Park group to secure funding.

“Hillsborough Park is one of our finest public spaces and we have great plans for its future as a destination park.

“It’s great to see the park’s future on track, and, with the new Coach House facility also being developed, things are looking up for Hillsborough, its fantastic park and the local community.”Councillor Mary Lea, Cabinet Member for Culture, Parks and Leisure

Hillsborough Park Coach House Café

Plans to convert the old Hillsborough Park Coach House into a dementia-friendly café are also progressing.

The Age UK charity have recently opened applications for an hospitality operator to help run the new facility.
