Sheffield City Council have begun consultation on a new Local Plan, which will inform developments in the Steel City over coming decades.

Sheffield’s Local Plan Consultation

If you have any comment on the future growth of Sheffield, this consultation is for you!

The Sheffield Local Plan consultation is open to residents, businesses, community groups, city workers, visitors and people who otherwise invest in the city.

This is your chance to have a say in the future of the city. The long term strategy formed from the consultation will set out how and where new development will take place until 2038.

Sheffield’s Core Strategy

The new Sheffield Local Plan will replace the current Sheffield Core Strategy (formerly called the Sheffield Development Framework Core Strategy), which was adopted in 2009.

Sheffield City Council uses the Core Strategy when deciding whether to grant planning permission for developments.

The current Core Strategy runs until 2026, creating a need to replace it with a new Local Plan.

“This consultation is an important opportunity to have your say on how you think our city should be developed in the future. The consultation will focus on our vision for Sheffield in years to come and will cover wide ranging issues from housing and jobs to creating new communities.”Councillor Bob Johnson, Cabinet Member for Transport and Sustainability

Sheffield Local Plan Objectives

Aims for the new Local Plan are to:

  • guide new development (such as housing, economic development, community and leisure facilities, transport infrastructure)
  • help protect the environment (such as countryside, open space, wildlife sites)
  • provide basis for deciding planning applications
  • identify and reserve land for development
  • support economic growth and provide certainty for developers.

The council previously consulted on an issues and options document in 2015 and found that many people were concerned about the number of housing developments that had been proposed on green belt land.

It was identified that the creation of new homes and stimulating economic growth are key areas to be addressed.

The consultation is open until 13 October and can be found online at Sheffield City Council’s Citizen Space website.

“These big decisions will shape the future of Sheffield. It’s important that we hear from as many local people as possible, this is your city and we need to know what is most important to you and how you would like to see it develop.”Councillor Bob Johnson, Cabinet Member for Transport and Sustainability
