Sheffield City Council moves to ‘No Overall Control’ after Labour loses out in the Local Elections. Leader of the Council Bob Johnson loses his seat.
Devastating results for Sheffield Labour in local elections
Labour has lost overall control of Sheffield City Council following this year’s local elections.
The party lost eight seats, reducing the total number of Labour councillors in Sheffield to less than half of available seats.
The Green Party gained the most seats from Labour, picking up five. The Liberal Democrats also took three seats. Labour has LOST Sheffield Council

Additionally, the Conservative Party gained their first seat in Sheffield for 20 years, in the Stocksbridge and Deepcar ward.
Leader of the Council Bob Johnson Loses his seat
Bob Johnson, the Leader of Sheffield City Council, was a huge casualty for the party having been ousted from his seat in the Hillsborough ward. Congratulations @SheffieldGreens and Christine Gilligan Kubo @HillsboroGreens – massive result.#GreenFuture #LE2021 https://t.co/SbQnuKQAq4— Natalie Bennett (@natalieben) May 7, 2021
The Labour leader had only been in position since December following previous leader Julie Dore standing down.
The Green Party took the seat by a 334 majority.
Governance Referendum Results to Come
As well as electing local councillors this year saw a vote on the Police and Crime Commissioner and a referendum on how the city council should be run.
Results for these votes will be counted on Monday. However, campaign observers at the verification earlier today have claimed to be confident of a win for Change to a Modern Committee System. Anecdotal reports from the verification of votes claim it looks likely the campaign for Change in the #SheffRef21 has won too.
We won’t know the actual official result until Monday however.— The Sheffield Guide (@thesheffguide) May 7, 2021
Of course nothing is official until the full proper count is completed.
