Two of Sheffield’s music legends — Arctic Monkeys and The Leadmill — have teamed up in an effort to try to save part of the city’s musical heritage.

Arctic Monkeys x The Leadmill

Covid-19, ongoing lockdown and social distancing measures are having a huge effect on music venues, which remain unable to operate.

The Leadmill has been forced to reschedule or cancel over 120 events so far. There is still no reopening date in sight, but costs are ongoing for this and many other venues.

Sheffield band Arctic Monkeys have stepped in to try and help the legendary venue, by donating a special guitar to raise funds in a raffle.

Win Alex Turner’s Black Fender Stratocaster

To help raise funds for The Leadmill and other grassroots venues, Arctic Monkeys have donated Alex Turner’s Black Fender Stratocaster guitar.

The instrument was used in early performances by the band, including at The Leadmill and a memorable Reading Festival appearance in 2006.

Fans or music lovers can enter a raffle to win the guitar for just £5 via a special Crowdfunder page.

As a bonus, everyone who enters will get access to watch the Arctic Monkey’s 2006 Reading Festival performance online.

The Music Venue Trust

The initiative has been organised in conjunction with The Music Venue Trust.

The trust have been working to assist struggling music venues throughout the pandemic crisis.

Entrants will get a special link to view Arctic Monkey’s 2006 Reading Festival performance online.

The gig will be aired at 8pm on Wednesday 26 August 2020 and remain available to watch for 24 hours.

Invite links will be sent out 2 hours before the showing begins.

The Leadmill, Sheffield

Sheffielders will need no introduction to one of the city’s most important music venues. Most will have attended a gig or club night there at some point.

It is difficult to overstate The Leadmill’s importance, not just for the city but for the music scene nationally.

Many local bands play the venue in their quest to make a career out of their music. Meanwhile, many huge national and international acts have played The Leadmill in it’s near half-decade of operation.

Pulp, Coldplay, Oasis, Stone Roses, The White Stripes, Muse and many more have graced The Leadmill stage over the years.
