John Lewis & Partners have agreed a new 20-year lease at their anchor store in Sheffield City Centre.

John Lewis & Partners to remain in Barkers Pool

One of Sheffield City Centre’s flagship stores, the large John Lewis & Partners store is a destination for shoppers throughout the region.

Today, John Lewis & Partners and Sheffield City Council have agreed a new 20-year lease. This commits the department store to their Sheffield location until 2040.

John Lewis have had a presence in the city since the Second World War, having acquired the Cole Brothers site from Selfridges Provincial Stores group.

“Shops continue to play a crucial role in our brand story, alongside a strong e-commerce offering.  Our focus is on ensuring that we have the right space in the right locations where our customers want to shop.”Chris Harris, Director of Property & Procurement, John Lewis Partnership

John Lewis store to be refurbished

As part of the new lease, the John Lewis store will undergo a refurbishment.

The plans will integrate the store into the Heart of the City II project currently being undertaken in the area.

Work on the refurbishment will take place in 2021. The store will remain open throughout.

“Securing John Lewis in the city centre has been one of our key long-term ambitions, so we’re delighted to get a deal done – particularly during a difficult time for the high street on a national scale.

“It is reassuring and exciting to know that one of the country’s leading retail brands has committed to the city. The restructured 20-year lease will help safeguard a significant number of jobs and retains the famous Cole Brothers building as its rightful use – a department store.”Councillor Mazher Iqbal, Cabinet Member for Business and Investment

John Lewis’s history in Sheffield

John Lewis have been a fixture in Sheffield for over 70 years.

Initially they bought the Cole Brothers department store from Selfridges Provincial Stores group at the advent of World War II.

The Cole Brothers store was originally located on Fargate, a location still colloquially known as ‘Coles Corner’.

in 1963 Cole Brothers moved to a purpose-built block at Barkers Pool, where it has remained ever since. However, in 2002 owners decided to rebrand the store to the overall partnership name of ‘John Lewis’.

Cole Brothers’ signage from the Barkers Pool store can be found today in Weston Park museum.

“We have had a presence in Sheffield for over 70 years and we have a loyal customer base in the city.  As such, we are delighted to have agreed a new lease with Sheffield City Council and look forward to continuing to serve our Sheffield customers.”Chris Harris, Director of Property & Procurement, John Lewis Partnership
